Autumn is a wonderful season. It’s where the world starts to slow and cool down, and we all have a chance to cozy up and admire some of the beauty that surrounds us. That sounds really cheesy, I know, but Fall really is a magical time of the year. It’s warm and wistful and peaceful, and I wanted to create a compilation of songs that capture that feeling, so here’s my Autumn playlist!
(Also, it’s important to note that a lot of these choices are just based on how the song sounds and not based on lyrics.)
1. Thriller – Michael Jackson
THE quintessential Halloween song. “It’s close to midnight and something evil’s lurkin’ in the dark. Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart. You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it. You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, you’re paralyzed.”
2. Wake Me Up When September Ends – Green Day
Not only does this song directly mention September, it also has a very Autumnal sound to it. “Summer has come and passed, the innocent can never last. Wake me up when September ends.”
3. Everything Has Changed – Taylor Swift
Okay, so the entire Red album sounds like Fall, but this song in particular really gives me Fall vibes. “All I know is pouring rain and everything has changed. All I know is a newfound grace, all my days I’ll know your face. All I know since yesterday is everything has changed.”
4. We’re Going to Be Friends – The White Stripes
“Fall is here, hear the yell. Back to school, ring the bell.”
5. November Rain – Guns N’ Roses
“So never mind the darkness, we still can find a way. ‘Cause nothin’ lasts forever, even cold November rain.”
6. Drunk On Halloween – Wallows
“Say a new day has dawned, but we no longer get to, ’cause I know the truth. The leaves are all gone, so who’s moving on? I know the worst is to come.”
7. My Little Corner of the World – Yo La Tengo
“Come along with me to my little corner of the world. Dream a little dream in my little corner of the world. You’ll soon forget that there’s any other place. Tonight, my love, we’ll share a sweet embrace.”
8. Sweet Disposition – The Temper Trap
“Sweet disposition, never too soon. Oh, reckless abandon, like no one’s watching you.”
9. Drops of Jupiter – Train
The Taylor Swift cover is also amazing and also has a very Fall-like sound. “But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet? Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day, and head back toward the Milky Way? And tell me, did you sail across the sun? Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all fade, and that heaven is overrated?”
10. September – Earth, Wind & Fire
If ya’ll don’t jam to this on September 21st then I’m judging you. “Love was changing the minds of pretenders, while chasing the clouds away.”
11. Yellow – Coldplay
“Look at the stars, look how they shine for you, and everything you do. Yeah, they were all yellow. I came along, I wrote a song for you, and all the things you do. And it was called ‘Yellow’.”
12. For Emma – Bon Iver
“With all your lies, you’re still very lovable. I toured the land, so many foreign roads.”
13. All Too Well – Taylor Swift
Yep, another song from Red. This time it’s a breakup song for the Fall season. “We’re singing in the car getting lost upstate. Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place, and I can picture it after all these days.”
14. Can’t Smile Without You – Barry Manilow
I don’t know man. It just sounds like a crisp, Fall evening. “I can’t smile without you. I can’t laugh and I can’t sing. I’m finding it hard to do anything.”
15. I Still Miss Someone – Johnny Cash
“At my door the leaves are falling. The cold, wild wind will come. Sweethearts walk by together, and I still miss someone.”
