One Direction: Four (2014) Song Ranking
With Midnight Memories, One Direction started to move away from the bubblegum-pop sound of their first two albums and into a more mature realm of songwriting. While I think that Midnight Memories is a great album, I also think it only planted the seeds for what became One Direction’s unique, personal sound. Four is the full bloom, and it sounds more artistic and personal than anything that came before it.
Louis Tomlinson: Walls (2020) Song Ranking
Walls, Louis Tomlinson’s debut solo studio album, shows a lot of emotional and musical maturity. While I am a huge fan of One Direction’s music, I don’t think it’s unfair to say that they weren’t allowed to get too personal in those songs. Walls sees Louis pouring his heart out about everything that’s been going on in his life, and I think he managed to put together an incredible selection of songs.
April 2020: Music Recap
April has been a pretty boring month for me, but I have made some great musical discoveries! Here they are:
The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour (1967) Song Ranking
Magical Mystery Tour was the soundtrack to the film of the same name, and it’s chock-full with some of the best songs in the entire Beatles catalog. You’re guaranteed to recognize at least a few of the song titles in the track list.
One Direction: Midnight Memories (2013) Songs Ranked
Midnight Memories was One Direction’s first great album. Up All Night and Take Me Home were both fun and charming and cute, but I wouldn’t call them great. The growth from those two albums that is evident in this one makes me very proud. Midnight Memories says goodbye to bubblegum pop and hello to rock-influence and even some folk-flavor.
Springtime Playlist
Springtime is where the world comes alive after the winter, and it’s where colors seem brighter and sounds seem clearer, and the air smells sweeter. Personally, I’m actually more of a winter-gal, but that’s just my opinion. Spring is a beautiful season, and I’ve managed to find a few songs that capture the happiness and vibrance of it. As always, my top choice will be in a different color.
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours (1977) Songs Ranked
Rumours by Fleetwood Mac is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and it’s considered to be one of the greatest albums ever made. I can definitely get behind this notion, because wow. What an awesome album. There isn’t a single bad song, and each song really captures a particular emotion and narrative. It’s a cohesive record, but each song still stands out.
March 2020: Music Recap
This has been quite the interesting month, with all the quarantine stuff that’s been going on. While that has obviously limited other aspects of my life, it has given me a lot of free time to focus on music, as well as this blog. At the beginning of the month I wasn’t really finding any new songs, and then about midway through March I started discovering a lot. Without further ado, let’s get into my musical discoveries of March 2020.
Billy Joel: An Innocent Man (1983) Song Ranking
Billy Joel’s ninth studio album, An Innocent Man, is actually really great. Usually I prefer Billy as a singles artist rather than an album artist, but this album was awesome the whole way through. Seriously, there’s not a single weak track. Maybe it’s because this a concept album; all the songs are inspired by 60s-music, and as a big 60s-music lover, I guess it was bound to sit well with me.
